In The Mist
The shadows flickered about the dark crimson and gold walls of the central gathering place as the creature materialized in one of the chairs near the fireplace. No matter how much the light attempted to crawl over him it never seemed to get far indeed. The most visable features were of course the tophat and the rapier on his hip, and the firelight causing the round tinted glasses he wore to glow a yellowish hue. He assessed each person that stood about the room with a solomn nod and then spoke.
“Welcome, to my home….” his lips curled up revealing a set of pointed fangs. “I understand you wish to learn more of this place? Well sit then… for it may take a moment or two of your oh so precious time. Do keep interruptions to a minimum it will only slow down the conclusion.”
Settling back as a goblet materialized in his hand he took a sip and rested it on the arm of his chair, lazily spinning it with his fingers from time to time.
“It was a night, not unlike many other nights which had come before in the lands of Legacies. The sleepy region and it’s neighbor Vamporium were just rousing from it’s slumber the dark things beginning to crawl forth from their tombs, catacombs, castles, and other sundry places of origin when the first sense that something not right had occured.
But to be able to move foreward with the tale, one must first look back, to garner a better understanding of the present state of the lands of Legacies… The decay, the darkness, and those which live within it.”
He paused there a moment as his eyes closed and then opened once again. Waving a dismissive hand he returned to the tale.
“I’ve seen this place since it’s birth, I’ve watched it’s growth, spilt blood and had mine spilt on it’s streets, and so much more. It, to me, is like a childer. But it has not been as you see it now. It was a great urban sprawl. Desolate abandoned buildings. Decay and squalor were abundant. Demons, lycans, vampires, fallen angels, and numerous other creatures called the lands home as well.”
His lips curled upwards in a rather amused grin. “none of which seemed to have the courage to see the story through to what end it may have.. None but the barest few…” shaking his head again he waved a hand. “Forgive me… I tend to editorialize my stories from time to time.”
“The short of it is simply this… The dark overlord, my brother, after long nights of slumber and preperation brought forth several peices of land. Ripped them, as a matter of fact, from numerous places across space and time. How, I don’t know, nor do I care. these arts are not mine nor do I wish them to be now that we have seen the consequences of them… I’ll stick to mastery of the dead things and spirits of the world, thank you very much.”
He snorted a moment at the thought and shook his head and took a sip of the goblet once again and looked into the faces of each one present around the fire. “Yes… oh there is always consequences to any action… Wether the dark lord foresaw these or not is something he keeps very quiet. But simply put, the lands I saw grow atrophied and diminished. This is the nature of entropy however… But then one night we all woke to a strange mist cloaking all of the remaining lands of Legacies. Where it had come from, why it was there, no one knew… but all -felt- the strangeness of it. The fact that it brought with it something which would impact each facet of life, or unlife, forever.”
Nodding slightly he lowered his head leaning foreward the bemused expression evident when the light settles on his tanned countenance finally. “The mists, did clear though, and as you see it now is how we’ve found it. These lands now, are as strange and new to us, as it is to each of you…”
Settling back against the chair once again he crossed his legs and finished the glass of blood and banished it back from the same place it came and spoke quietly.
“I had intended, originally, to be long winded… but I think that this has sufficed… Ultimately… we will all experience these lands together, what may come… who knows… but it will be by our hands. You have the basic history of what came before… should you want more I’m sure you’ll be resourceful enough to find the old ones like myself and ask…”
And with that he seemed to meld into the shadows and vanish once again.. His voice lingering in the air.
“Welcome to Legacies….”
